The last couple of years have been great for cruise holidays with a host of new ships of all shapes and sizes taking to the seas. There genuinely is now a cruise for everyone - from the mega ships which offer everything from ice rinks and climbing walls and have 4000-5000 guests on board to the small, intimate cruise ships where you can enjoy Michelin-standard food and wine brought to you in your luxury cabin by your personal steward.

There's a lot more to cruising than this. Hurtigruten - try saying the name and keeping a straight face - offer a much more intimate atmosphere cruising the Norwegian fjords, with some of their ships still providing essential services such as postal deliveries to the remoter village communities in Scandinavia. Star Clipper and Windstar offer cruises under sail, whilst Swan Hellenic offer you an array of special interest journeys from archaeology to the Antarctic.

Cruising doesn't just mean the sea either. There are a wonderful selection of river cruises available. The Yangste and Nile remain favourites, but the great waterways of Europe such as the Rhine, Danube and Douro provide wonderful contrasts of scenery and style and a true classic is cruising from Moscow to St Petersburg.
