For many people, Switzerland is best-known for cuckoo-clocks, expensive watches, chocolate, cheese and incredibly useful pen-knives. However, we know that these icons give only the briefest insights into this diverse and fascinating country. Through this Experience Switzerland travel and tours programme, we would love to help you to get to know and understand the four very different regions that make up the Swiss Confederation, or Confoederatio Helvetica (CH), better.
The mountains of the Bernese Oberland are really as spectacular in real life as they look in their postcards. The Matterhorn does look like a piece of a well-known Swiss chocolate bar. Zurich and Geneva ooze affluence, and, despite the challenges of its terrain, Switzerland does have one of these most punctual, efficient, and well-integrated public transport systems in the world that means that there is hardly a part of the country that cannot be reached by train or Post Bus - nearly always arriving to the minute of the appointed time. However, this really only scratches the surface of this beautiful country, and, if you'll pardon the cuckoo-clock analogy, what makes it tick !
There really are four very diverse areas and nationalities - don't imagine that the German-speaking part of Switzerland has that much in common with its powerful next-door-neighbour, with the Swiss-German dialect being so strong that it is close to being a different language as well. In contrast, the Swiss-Romane speak one of the purest forms of French that you could wish to hear, but are as chalk and cheese to the French themselves. The Italian-speaking region enjoys an almost mediterranean climate for large parts of the year, and has a very different culture and cuisine to the rest of the country, whilst the small but very proud Romansch region has its own language and heritage that it fosters proudly.
There is so much to experience in Switzerland that you'll be able to find something that will entice you to holiday there, somewhere at every time of year. Call in, call us or visit the Contact Us page to send us an e-mail with your travel plans, including using Switzerland's fabulous rail system.
For some countries, cheese, chocolate, pen-knives, watches and mountains would be enough, but for Switzerland they are just the starting point for so much more.
