• As a tourist destination, Germany can be described as a veritable 'sleeping giant' waiting to be discovered. The Rhine, for example, is the classic river-cruising river. It's easy to get to, the scenery is beautiful, as are the cities and different stopping-off points which each have their own charm and history. No surprise, therefore, that a Rhine cruise is the most popular choice for first-time river-cruisers, but offers a lot to those who have fallen in love with this way of taking a holiday.
  • Christmas Markets in cities such as Dresden, Cologne, Nuremberg and Berlin are well-visited by travellers from across the world, as well as being integral to every German family's preparation for the Festive Season. Munich's famous Oktoberfest, which confusingly mostly takes place in September gives many people the perfect excuse for visiting this elegant city. Less well-known, but no less fun is the Cannstatter Volksfest in Stuttgart, and the Christmas Markets in Hamburg, Mainz, and Heidelberg are as good as any in country.
  • There are huge areas of pristine forests punctuated by picturesque villages and historic town. Getting down south, there is Lake Constance - or the Bodensee in German - one of Europe's most spectacular lakes, with islands, such as Mainau that spring into life from April onwards, and are a blaze of colourful flowers. Or, think about heading eastwards to Potsdam and Dresden, where a world of beautiful music from Bach to Wagner awaits.
